  1. Irony time: In the 1980s mainstream comedy was full of Tory-supporting comics and their stuff was seen as horribly dated by the kids. Thus rose Alternative Comedy. At the time the press were railing against 'unfunny lefty comedians' seemingly with no understanding that a) A lot of the alt-comics weren't that lefty (Rowan Atkinson for example) and b) Rik Mayall was considerably funnier than Tarby etc. Now those kids have grown into miserable boomers and are on the Internet pretending proper comedy is all the stuff they loathed as teenagers. The circle of life continues...

  9. Comedy changes over time depending on culture. Much funny modern comedy would easily get banned in the 1950s, say. While 1950s comedy looks weird now (Think Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore sleeping in separate beds sort of thing). Charlie Chaplin was the top comedian in history - yet his stuff hasn't aged that well. Ditto for Harold Lloyd or Buster Keaton. Although Laurel and Hardy are still hilarious and comedy legends whose stuff works even now.

Fox did the same years ago in the US and there is indeed a much-respected documentary on the topic. P.S. Are you actually threatening me? Aren't we supposed to allow free speech? *remember kids, if they were that arsed about leaving the EU they'd have voted for Michael Foot in the 80s or the Referendum Party in the 90s. But they voted for Pro-single market Thatcher.

  24. In the US they had a 1970s all-black sitcom called 'Good Times' which was excellent and featured a teenage nerd into black radical politics. Something like that would get screamed about today as right-wingers would flip over the 'militant midget'.

  28. It has actually, but it's hit the over 50s far worse. Never in recent history have we had a Britain where the over 50s regularly vote to screw over the young people then spent all their spare time complaining young people are terrible. And when questioned on why they feel this way, 99% certainty is nonsense they're gobbling up on social media. There's a whole documentary about this from years ago called 'The Brainwashing of my Dad'.

There were probably people complaining in the 1960s about 'Julian and Sandy' on Round the Horne... down with this sort of thing etc.

  40.  @pollyparrot8759  The Year of the Sex Olympics is a bang-on dystopia from the 1960s. Written by Nigel 'Quatermass Kneale' it postulated a future where people are entertained by mind-numbing reality TV shows and ubiquitous smut. The clothes are a bit bonkers, but the story very interesting.

In fictional stories there's literally dozens and dozens of weird race castings - Olivier as Othello, Mickey Rooney as a Japanese bloke, Fisher Stevens playing an Indian, and all the white guys who played Fu Manchu and Charlie Chan.

Is funny the Brexit movement coincided exactly with a schism in the Tory party and all these 'pro-business' conservatives voted to eviscerate their own economy just to keep themselves in power.
