  2. Returning to the US is arguably still a better overall environment due to mRNA vaccines and better hospital care that America has compared to the equivalent available in China. And Omicron presents a very real threat of uncontrollable outbreaks unless the PRC government doubles down on budget-blowing long surprise periods of forced isolation "treatment" that is overall worse than the disease itself -- adding fuel to the simmering discontent and anomie growing among its people.

Many want to leave, China is no longer a fun and inviting assignment due to the near total shutdown of leisure travel and the constant threat of getting medically detained for simply going through a surprise "red zone". An evacuation order would fund the trip out and maintain pay status while they figure out what to do next.

  4. But COVID is increasingly tolerable, accelerated by Western-made mRNA vaccines which China refuses to give in to. Doing 3+ weeks of quarantine with every travel isn't so sustainable, especially when the global competition is moving on.

  5.  @lettucesalad3560  China would never reveal it though, and I'd bet they conveniently didn't keep track of how many bodies they burned anyway. The Economist though put out an estimate that China lost upwards of 2 million to COVID; so still better per capita than America, but also a more alarming statistic pointing at China's medical ineffectiveness which the Party doesn't want its people to know... especially with Omicron now in country and threatening to break out particularly during CNY and the Olympics.
