Nowadays it's more because a disruption would be catastrophic, and not so much because of compassion with Mainlanders or a sense of rightful sovereignty over all of China -- Taiwanese identity as solely or concurrently Chinese has since cratered as the Communists continue proving that economic prosperity does not make them less belligerent or more attractive. For the Party, the continued existence of the ROC (especially a democratized one) is a fundamental counterexample of how Chinese people could not only live but also thrive without the CPC, one that they must ultimately obliterate if they wish to continue unchallenged despotic control over China.

  2. China needed life support from Britain and America, but Chinese resilience certainly kept the Japanese pinned down to the final blow. Sadly the story of all that blood and effort has since been coopted by the Communists, who themselves only contributed in minor skirmishes when they weren't occasionally collaborating with the Japanese against their KMT opposition.
