Apparently the 38th was much farther south than Stalin expected to haggle for, which is why he immediately agreed. I'd imagine he was thinking more of a unified Korea under the US while they took Manchuria across the Yalu River.

It echoes Japan before and after WWII: on par with European powers only to get its forces divided and defeated. Both were colonizers exerting near full political control over its holdings with all the expenses that incurs, and ultimately both overextended.

Right, the atomic bombs were a convenient excuse to capitulate wholesale to the Americans compared to the true annihilation that the Communists offered. Seeing what happened to the un-nuked China and Korea afterwards, the Japanese predicted it correctly.
