One thing I've learned from living in low tax revenue regimes is that it guarantees popular political apathy, corruption, and wealth hoarding, all for the promise of investment and economic growth. And I'm sure America's often born-privileged "free market" advocates know this as they push for more deregulation and weaker government.

From what I remember, the KMT's claims were a reaction to an obscure French claim to the sea for their Indochina colony right after WWII which Vietnam now maintains. The KMT claim was subsequently inherited by the PRC.

Humans have gotten by through villages and extended families that can look after the kids for free while both parents are busy. Now we pay through the nose for daycare and babysitters because those trust networks no longer exist in the developed world of largely isolated nuclear families.

I'm surprised more wasn't said about China's irredentist claims on the Russian Far East, which it had lost to Moscow in an 19th century "unequal treaty" and has since been realized to contain vital hydrocarbon and freshwater resources that Beijing desperately desires control over.

I believe that the pension should really be based on a percentage of how much the current taxpayers could pitch in each month or year. If the real income of young workers trends downward, so should the gratuities involuntarily paid to retirees.

Pensions and stock sales are technically not local work. Plus places like the Philippines and Thailand and Belize have residency schemes that specifically cater to foreign retirees.
