That's basically the story of our housing market in general: older incumbents defending their own sense of lifestyle at the expense of the youth.

@Nswix Degrees however help shield against downward social mobility. Blue-collar trades aren't a panacea either, often leaving you with chronic medical conditions by the time you retire. But worst off are those without a couple years worth of postsecondary training of any sort.

Boomers in general vote against densification and public transit improvements because it would change the "character" of the community. Even now they sell their prime real estate to higher-bidding corporations to pay for selfish consumption like dead-end eldercare and retiree-only communes.

@Nswix It could be the design of the community, i.e. too dense with those who need it while lacking cheap reliable transportation like a walkable public transit hub. I know a few people who used to be in Section 8 housing and are now homeowners; you wouldn't know the old house was publicly-assisted unless you were told.

And governments wonder why their native population is shrinking, forcing them to explore other policies about more open immigration, hoping on technology, and tampering expectations on the standards of living.

Not where housing is desired though. Sure you can scoop up an abandoned Rust Belt shack, or even live in Hawaii but only on a volcanic homestead. There's a reason housing prices are insane in the places they are.
