@rosieE121 No. Several corrupt SCOTUS rulings have made it legal. They have given the former USA over to the UWA (United Wealthy of America). Now, the US is controlled by corrupt, rich narcissists, sociopaths & psychopaths. But so are most other nations. The US corruption is simply on steroids.

The rich-owners of the Repub party want the government to be too small to help the poor-workers, and the rich-owners trick the poor-workers into voting for the rich-owners by telling the poor-workers that the 'big government' is coming to get them. Those same rich-owners of the Repub party want the government to be big enough to protect themselves from the poor-workers, just in case the poor-workers ever get smart enough to realize that the rich-owners are the sources of oppression for the poor-workers. You're correct -- the T-gov't is NOT small. It's big enough to protect the rich-owners who want nothing more than to enslave the poor-workers. And the poor-workers are not yet wise enough to comprehend the ruse, which is proven by their continuously voting for the rich-owners & their Repub party. Disclaimer: This is not an endorsement of the Dem party. The Dem party is owned by the SAME rich-owners as the Repub party. The rich-owners control BOTH of the parties in the US, and the poor-workers continue to vote for BOTH of them. It's been going on for about 200-years. I'm sure it'll let up anytime now.
