  1. I've always rechecked oil when it was cold. I change my own oil and I give it a long drain, like a hour. Than I start it run it to operating temperature , than let it settle before checking the oil. I will check the oil 3 or 4 times while it's cooling and slowly top it up. Check it one more time the next morning and bingo it's just a smidgen below the line.
