@MrViki60 Being realistic, none of these generative AI companies make sense. The results are not great and are slow and energy-intensive to compute. Now regarding a non-profit getting lots of donations and then switching to for-profit without even any significant IP being freely licensed...if that's not a bait-and-switch I don't know what is. I hate Musk's guts but I'm on his side in coming down on Altman and OpenAI like a ton of bricks. Granted, what really needs to happen is the definition of non-profit needs to be fixed. A good start would be to require non-profits to publish all their IP under liberal or copyleft licenses (their choice) save for IP related to branding.

@waterbloom1213 The problem isn't that they want to operate as a business, if Altman wants to take his money and found a startup that's perfectly fine. The problem is people have donated money thinking the organisation wasn't going to profit off of it and now the organisation has turned around and decided that it will after all.

@gigamoment But as a non-profit competing with for-profit companies shouldn't really be the goal, I could see allowing non-profits become governmental services but allowing them to become for-profit seems like a bait-and-switch for the people who donated.

@Jupa Though the fact that a business with the goal of making money can be classed as a non-profit is a problem in and of itself.

"trust me bro" AI isn't a source of information or structurally sound organised data. It can emulate sloppy human-written text, but don't trust the contents to be correct nor expect it to write reliable code. I would expect that asking it to graph a function will lead to incorrect results as well.
