Re defensive forts: if you look at the United States coastline there were so many places to defend we would have needed a fleet larger than the English had. Then some bright boy would have scattered them all up and down the coast in pennypackets to be beaten piecemeal. The forts were good concept and an effective defense. If you had a squadron that was totally outnumbered and outgun they could hide behind the fort and had their fire against the enemy squadron as they attempted to enter the port. As you said it's hard to knock out a fort from a ship. Too many variables ship rocking and rolling in particular scatters your shot. The fort is very steady and the only thing that's going to affect your shooting is wind and the other environmental concerns.

I agree 110% on Dutch Admiral Dorman. Not to speak ill of him, I feel a British officer would have done better.

I think Admiral Yamamoto was held hostage by his culture when he came to the overly complicated plans. If you look at every Naval plan executed by the Imperial Japanese Navy after his death they all have the same trademark. Essentially they would have needed GPS and nuclear clocks to keep their fleets that were spread all over God's green acre in synch.
