Naguma was having to cycle his cap. That was part of the reason he wasn't able to spot his deck. And he was using that time to rearm the aircraft he had in the hangar for a sea Battle. Not every zero came away from the battle with the torpedo bombers undamaged I'm guessing. They probably were consuming a lot of their ammo load and even if they had plenty of fuel they still need to rearm. That's why they weren't able to spot. Be interesting also to know how long it takes to cycle a zero from cap to rearm and refuel and back in the air.

If you want to get down to insubordination and disobedience of orders, Mitcher clearly disobeyed his orders from Fletcher. So they were more concerned with saving Mitcher's ass then the truth

I agree 200% your comment regarding Admiral Fletcher at Midway. It took courage and an absence of ego to let Admiral Spruance continue in command.

I think Fletcher was a very conservative admiral and very effective at the beginning of the war. I think he could have been effective as a test group Commander under the overall command of someone else later in the war because of his experience. I don't think he should have been beached. Probably one of the most gracious Acts by any admiral in the US Navy during World War II was Fletcher seconding himself to Spruance once Yorktown was incapacitated. He understood that not having a carrier to command he was hampered to try and exercise overall command of hornet and Enterprise at that point. Takes a lot of courage to be able to admit you're the wrong place at the right time.

How many of those zeros that took on vt8 were Winchester or almost out of gas? That would be an interesting thing to know.

Does anyone know who the individual was who came up with the idea of flooding the fuel lines on American carriers with carbon monoxide? That probably saved more lives than anything during this battle and possibly later battles. I don't think it made his big a difference once Kamikaze started. But it still had to help. If we could ever find that name he should be an immortalized.

@CFarnwide I think by Midway Fletcher needed a rest as well. He had been at sea since the beginning with threadbare forces, just fought a battle and now lost his flagship.

I agree with the assessment on the time issue for getting the carriers spotted to launch an attack. There isn't enough time. I also agree that the plane spotted on Deck were from the cap not for the strike. That is not to say there weren't fighters in the hangar they were the escorts. The zero would be an excellent capfighter except the reality that shooting is more of an art than a science at that time. Hose and hope was more common. You basically would start firing and then try to walk you rounds into the target. The problem zeros had is the trajectory of their 20 mm guns was significantly lower than their machine guns. This was true until later in the war when a higher velocity weapon was fielded.

In your new book about 1942, I hope you do a deep dive on admiral Wright commander at Tassfaronga.
