@dimelo3027 Just because Mandarin Chinese is "more accessible" to people like you, IS NOT A REASON, for it, to be the official language. An official language SHOULD BEST REPRESENT, a nation + its people. Mandarin Chinese contains lots of "barbaric", NON-HAN, Mongol + Manchu Words.

@eugeneng7064 No one ever claimed/wrote that Cantonese "had not changed"; in Hong Kong, Cantonese contains lot of English Words. I STRONGLY FEEL that the ONLY 71y/o CCP + Beijing, have no right to destroy my 2000 YEAR OLD Mother Language. Cantonese REFLECTS BETTER China's 5000 years of history, esp the Tang Dynasty.

@andrewdog-gonewaylon5915 Highly doubt that Hong Kongers "never realize" Cantonese originated in Canton Province. Many Hong Kongers EMIGRATED from Canton Province.

@phsamuelwork THANK YOU !

@KennysLeftEyelash Right. It should be referred to as "Mandarin Chinese" - Mandarin being an adjective, while Chinese is the noun. Likewise, we also have Cantonese Chinese, Shanghainese Chinese...

@mohdghazali3473 The reason Mandarin is the"National Language" was because Dr Sun Yat Sen, born in Guang Dong Province, thought it would be too difficult to make Cantonese the official language, for the new Republic of China, since the corrupted Qi Dynasty were speaking Mandarin.
5
@Mohd Ghazali CORRECTION - the corrupted Qing Dynasty.

@yibinchen5597 She is DEFINITELY not a kind Chinese. It is OK, if you didn't know any of this. Even if you ARE CHINESE, + no matter what age you are, you can ALWAYS learn new things.
3
@Fangfang Chen Cantonese is the lingua franca of - Guang Dong Province (popu 113,460,00) + Guang Xi (48,380,000), - Hong Kong, Macau, the Chinese Communities in Southeast Asia
2
@phsamuelwork HEARN KONG GNAI YIAU ! Glad you are safe.
2
@LuciusLaw-k1z ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. Esp when Mandarin contains lots of "barbaric" Mongol + Manchu Words.

@ilmanley Genghis Khan murdered more people - 40 million in 25 yrs than the Romans did in 400 yrs. During China's "Century of Shame", Cixi stole money slated for the army, to fund her decadent lifestyle.
1
@ilmanley Why do you assume we want to be again subjugated by the Brits or independence? I personally want what Bejing promised before Hong Kong was rid of the Brits in 1997, which is the framework of "1country, 2 systems", whereby for 50 years Hong Kong was promised considerable political autonomy. I could understand if the "National Unsecurity Law" was imposed in 2037, or even 2027, but it was maliciously enacted in 2020.

@珊珊-t6v Many languages, including Cantonese, Italian, Spanish, + French have many English loans words. What is genuinely simple, is that you only cited Mandarin.
1
@Ho Lam YIU ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. When HK's Peter Chan was filming "The Warlords", he said if his crew wrote the dialogue placards in: - Traditional Chinese, Jet Li couldn't read it. - Simplified Chinese, Andy Lau + Takeshi Kaneshiro didn't understand it.
1
@Tekhelet75 Right. I always wrote Mandarin Chinese contains lots of Mongolian + Manchu Words. Thankfully people in Canton Province, Hong Kong, Macau + the majority of the Chinese Diaspora, still speak Cantonese Chinese.
1
Godon Gurando is another T-800 OK As for Cantonese, not the people of Hong Kong PRESENTLY and DEFINITELY not the large Cantonese Diaspora.
1
@Felix Chau Actually it is quite misleading. It should be Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese Chinese, Sichuanese Chinese, etc
