Angela Merkel: 14 years in power - but what happens next?
20
I wonder what a govt would be like if it were only a neutral mediator between equally powerful employer associations and union federations. The nordic countries do this, but with the govt similar to other govts and not just a neutral mediator.

Pretty sure any volunteers with guns will be treated as mercenaries and not POWs, as mercenaries are against the rules of war. Though this would happen anyway as Russia's behaviour towards actual civilians is not good.
8
Funny how govts have no money, unless they want to spend it on the military or other countries. Perhaps citizens should shout for humanitarian aid...or identify as a defence contractor.

24:00 It's not colour, it's behaviour. What about the rights of students who want to learn in an environment without violence, disruptions, or misbehaviour?
6
Never understood why some things are pegged to inflation and others not. Peg the min wage to inflation.

10:24 Misbehaving MPs... "Using the whip?" Sounds kinky 😏
5
@ppate8 They really did lose a lot when they switched from telling all sides equally to the point of not being able to tell what the journalist believed in to our current "s-x and mayhem sells" model
5
Why does the prime minister expect other MPs to resign when merely accused, but the prime minister himself refuses to resign when definitive proof that he violated the law (his own law he put into effect)? And the govt ministers aren't defending the chief who, but are defending the prime minister, because guess which of the above can fire ministers? And don't get me wrong—they both should have resigned or have been forced out.
5
When they say small business, they mean amazon and asset management companies. Shrew those plebians. 🙃

I'm waiting for the lightsabre battle between the "sith" lord and her. Well, at least palpatine said that he loved democracy. This lord essentially called out the peasants for voting leave.

@thornados4969 Just like how Americans in south use God in everything. God bless. Thank god. Nothing overtly preachy about it. Not condemning anybody.

I found she asked the same hard questions with the govt

Kier Starmer makes a great party leader for the conservatives or liberal democrats. How can a party that calls itself labour not advocate half the board of directors be employee reps? How can they not be for nationalising or municipalizing public goods (eg energy)? How can they not be for a National Housing Service like the national health service, or mandate that only 30% of income shall be charged to renters or lessees? There's only so far a pikachu can change before it must be called a Raichu. If labour won't stick to its fundamental principles, then change the name.

Can the underpaid move to western china? Much more spacious and open. I assume since china claims hong kong as part of china that residents can freely move back and forth, eh?

20:04 Don't foreign leaders have diplomatic immunity? Why is the Virgin Islands premier still in custody? Further, the governor of the virgin Islands must follow the will of the premier unless there are certain circumstances. Surprisingly, this isn't one of them. The premier is still in charge. The cabinet can vote him out. The party can expel him. The parliament can do a vote of no confidence. The Governor shouldn't be involved just yet. American laws don't apply to foreign leaders. They can expel him. They cannot arrest him
1
Why are those parliamentary private secretaries MPs? Though private secretaries were civil servants. Next thing I'll learn is Boris Johnson is an active duty general and that the govt is a military junta.

Russians are seeing through the loophole of enlisting in the Ukrainian army to prevent mercenary status. However, from what I've heard, they're using Ukrainian military law to show that they could not have enlisted as one must be a resident for a few years first. As such, Russia and the Ukrainian separatists considers them mercenaries.

Never understood why some are exempt from strikes. Let them strike and just use contractors, if needed.
1
@andyd2033 Well, New Labour is not Labour Classic. They are essentially the more hip Liberal Democrats or Conservative Party. Kier Starmer makes a great party leader for the conservatives or liberal democrats. How can a party that calls itself labour not advocate half the board of directors be employee reps? How can they not be for nationalising or municipalizing public goods (eg energy)? In 2014, didn't the us help foment the coup that removed a democratically elected president of Ukraine? Now the us accuses russia of doing what it (allegedly) did.
1
Im sorry, but arming Russian neighbours can be considered aggressive. JFK threatened nuclear war in the 60s when the soviet union armed cuba, a US neighbour. The truth lies between the Realpolitik of Western media and Russian media.
1
Because labour isn't labour anymore and hasn't been for a while. Corbyn was set to revive the traditional workers party, but was removed by the corporate backers of the new labour party. How dare those workers try to take back the labour (workers) party! How dare labour supporters support the unions! 🙃

I'm for it, but I was also for Catalonia. The EU will stay out of it, even if troops or police sent in and leaders arrested. I'd hate for Nicola sturgeon to end up like Catalonia president puigdemont. If johnson doesn't recognize another scottish referendum, he could do what the Spanish prime minister did.
1
Or just follow the modern Australian standard: call him mick or michael.
1
What did he do? Reagan in the 80s fired them, but what did Nixon in the 70s do?
1
I prefer it when the interviewees are not asked soft ball questions.
1
My comment about mercenaries only applies to foreign nationals fighting (eg American civilians, British civilians) in ukraine, not ukrainian citizens who are defending their country.
1
5:55 Did this noble just call out the peasants for voting leave? Now that's good old fashioned elitism. 😋
1
I was going to say that yes the US pays almost half the gas price of the UK, But is more car-centric. With the strikes though, Britain will probably face LA-style traffic jams (known as the 20-lane parking lot) and the full brunt of ⛽️ prices. Sorry. Be nice if the UK could do the Japanese and Australian style of strikes where the trains run, but the striking workers refuse payment from customers. Punishing only the corporate bosses and not the customers.
1
Like with the conservative-backed alaskan permanent fund? Residents get annual dividend from natural resources that is invested in the stock market and forex.
1
@englandcalling9721 Well, it is a LABOUR party. Of course it should have socialists and social democrats. The party has been taken over by neoliberals and conservative lites. Those should have made their own party instead of making the workers party into the corporate party.
1
Kiwi working in San Antonio. Cheers 🤠
1
@innerdumbasssystem Sky is much more balanced than Fox. The UK has standards and enforces them. 😋
1
Ships already blatantly do this. Their board, their crew, and their service area in no way reflects the country flag they fly.
1
38:00 What do the US, Syria, Nigeria, and Argentina have in common? They all use the failed and dictatorship-prone presidential system. The us is the only one that has not yet devolved into dictatorship at some point in its history. The problem is we treat the symptoms and not the underlying cause. Change out the presidential system for a MMP 7+ party parliamentary system or collegial system (a la Switzerland) and things can get better.
1
Will he get his job back if the indie committee finds him not guilty? If not, what's the point?
1
The other option is something like a permanent jobkeeper (a la australia). The govt would negotiate with business sector associations and sector unions for hiring everyone to 100% employment and much shorter work hours, paid vacations, and benefits. 25 hour workweek and 3 months vacation would be nice. The job keeper may pick up half the tab so businesses aren't put out of businesses. It can be paid for by a flat VAT.
1
Legal question: Why is it "my lord" and "your honour", but not "your lord" and "my honour"?
1
China is big enough to where everyone can be guaranteed 1 acre (0.6 hectares). If govt did land grants again the cities could depopulated and prices could go down.
1

1
@daithideburca98 Well, that is democracy. Even representatives fall for it too. The only 100% solution is autocracy in some form. I believe the expression is "they have made their bed, now they must sleep in it.
1
Wait. Was the middle person in the screenshot Catherine Tate (from Doctor who, et al)? That would be funny as Jeremy Cornyn looks like the actor who played her dad in doctor who (wilfred mott)

@acthompson9983 Pensions are robbed. Watch and see if they switch to a 401k like they did in the states.
