  5. VAT, CAP, the protected Single Market and the Euro - a perfect formula for failure. The theory behind it is known as Mercantilism and was obsolete by 1750. It owes quite a lot to Catholic Social Teaching and comes from the 13th century. Unfortunately the structure of the EU makes it impossible to change. The so called sanctions against Russia are really a boycott and were the tipping point. All entirely predictable.
