The real, central reasons for Putin's invasions had nothing to do with NATO, a defensive, not offensive alliance designed to protect against aggression. -- The first reason was Russia's quest for an old fashioned, hated, force based empire whch potential subjects would never choose on their own. An even more important reason was Putin's fear of prosperous, democratic and successful nations developing on its borders that would cause the Russian folks to enjoy likewise. That would have, by its essential nature, a destabilizing threat to Putin's totalitarian dictatorship. -- IRONY: Those fears have led Putin to do things which actually made Russia poorer and less powerful than it might have been with a genuine, less corrupt and democratic government.
