bastisonnenkind https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trams_in_Berlin Most of the streetcars run on the East German side of the city- which, I mean, the Soviets weren’t that great at staying up to date with infrastructure, period. Their rail network had serious congestion issues and the road network wasn’t really invested that much in. Streetcars survived in Toronto too because the city decided to bail them out- and they’re only a little bit better than buses (smoother).

bastisonnenkind It’s not really a good thing, because it was a symptom of a major problem across the Eastern Bloc. Either way, Trams aren’t that much better than buses. The ride is less loud and bumpy, but that’s about it. Unless you’re going very-high capacity, in which case LRT is the way to go. You also can’t avoid obstacles as well, and the routing is much less flexible. Streetcars worked because there was much less traffic. Today, that’s impossible to achieve without outright designating space for transit.

Phyarth The Streetcar conspiracy is not taken seriously by any transit experts. Truth is, streetcars we’re just outdated. The fall of American Transit is more multi-layered and cultural than that.

Roman Bukins The big issue runs with Urban space. Cars are extremely space- inefficient and thus require building cities for cars, not humans. This has a ton of knock-on effects, like not being able to put businesses within a convenient distance to where people live. You can’t have a vibrant town center when half of your land is consumed by parking lots.
