Because people would be able to understand it for themselves and then see that the Bible contained nothing about purgatory, indulgances etc. The power of the Catholic Church didn't want that. Thank God for those who translated the Bible into English and other venacular languges for us. What good is a Bible in a language no one can read. Christ spoke Aramaic the common language of the people not Hebrew with them. He was humble and never appointed to be his vicar on earth that's the Holy Spirit's job.
