  1. The history of the Philippines is a history of being dominated by foreign powers. It’s baked into their culture. Today it’s China, yesterday it was the US, and last week it was the Spanish. At least with the Chinese some efforts are made to integrate with the Filipino society, unlike the White colonial powers who just saw them as another sub-human conquered people. The real problem with the Philippines is that its leaders are utterly corrupt, and anyone with brains/talents/connections immediate immigrate to the West. That leaves a bunch of uneducated peasants ruled by a few elite families, who in turn serve the interest of their foreign overlords. Doing business with China is a double-edged sword. But if you know how to use that sword, you can extract maximal economic benefits which can in turn be used to elevate your country. Other Southeast Asian countries know this. Many African countries know this. But if the Philippines go down that route without fixing its power structure first, all that money generated will just get sucked up by the elite families without benefitting the rest of the population.

  4. Hoàng Nguyên Yeah it’s funny how different countries react differently post-colonialism. But Vietnam has a history of punching above its weight against super powers, whether it’s America or ancient China.

  5. Angry Kittens I honestly don’t know much about North Korea, but have you seen the GDP growth of Laos, Cambodia, and Pakistan over the last decade? I’ll save you the googling and tell you that they are all rocketing. And do you even know what happened during World War 2? China fought AGAINST the Axis power. What is this world domination you’re talking about? Your ignorance is honestly astounding. No, I don’t think China is perfect, but the US frankly doesn’t give AF about the Phillippines or Asia in general, and is perfectly fine with the country remaining the way it is. Ultimately it’s not about choosing China or the US, it’s about the failure of the Filipino institutions and its selfish and corrupt leadership class. A few decades ago the Phillippines was one of the brightest and most progressive country in Asia, and now it is a legitimate 3rd world backwater, and it is a goddamn shame.

  6. Angry Kittens lol okay buddy if you are Filipino I feel bad for you. The US never threatened the Phillippines with war? They already fought you and won in 1902 and owned you until 1946, killing hundreds of thousands and by some estimate up to a million Filipino civilians in the process. Colonialism may have supposedly ended, but remind me again how many US soldiers and weapons are in Phillippines right now? Meanwhile China is disputing what? Some unmanned islands and reefs in the sea? Talk about a false equivalence. And yes I looked at the last decade for GDP, because the last decade is when China and Asia as a whole took off. The Phillippines had the same growth rate? Funnily enough, guess who the number one foreign investor and the number one export destination for the Phillippines is? Hint: it’s not the United States. Does China have a poor record regarding human rights? Yes, absolutely. But I dont think it’s necessarily for me to list all civilians the US has killed world-wide post WW2, let alone the genocide and slavery that the nation is built on. No I’m not saying both sides are the same, but it’s not clear to me which side is worse. Even as we speak the US is providing the weapons used by the Saudis to perform genocide in Yemen, and running drone missions that kill hundreds of thousand civilians every year. Finally, no, China cant do anything about Filipino corruption. No outside country can. That part you have to do for yourselves. Look bottom line is I wish Phillippines the best, and Im not advocating for you to bow to anyone. But outside of war, the only way to grow your country and improve your standard of living is through trade. Mao’s China was a very different country than today’s China, and one belt one road is nothing like Greater Asia Co-prosperity Sphere. Right now there is only one country that is forcing everyone to choose sides, and it ain’t China. But do what you think is best for your country, because ultimately you’re the one that has to live in it.
