  1. It’s really not that complicated. Most Taiwanese people don’t want to be ruled by an authoritarian government and live behind the great firewall, but they don’t want war either. If Taiwan can become independent without bloodshed that would be the first pick. The second pick is status quo. Reunification as an autonomous zone is a veeery distant third option, seeing as how Hong Kong was supposed to be the litmus test and China broke their promises and stole the HK democracy and cracked down on dissidents within a decade. Straight up reunification with China though? Anybody with any amount of money or specialized skill would probably immediately immigrate. It would be like Hong Kong in 1997 but on steroids.
