Comments by "TJ Marx" (@tjmarx) on "Government unveils barge to house unprocessed asylum seekers" video.
"putting your morality aside is there a legal obligation..." "Yes, it's not actually a law but I think we should". The moment you're incapable of separating your emotions from your logic you have no argument and no one should listen to you. The answer is no, there is no legal obligation. The UK is following the Australian model and it 100% works everywhere it's deployed. The Australian model is so effective the UN is considering changes to the refugee convention to enshrine the Australian model into international law. These barges are an ok start but they're moored inside British waters which doesn't solve the issue. Replace this little boat with a super large container ship, house then on there offshore and in international waters. They don't come on or off until their claim is processed. That's the proper way the Australian model is undertaken. You are basically making a floating town. Yes conditions will suck. That's the point. Those international waters remove the legal pressure on asylum claims and allow third party resettlement. It's the way around Rwanda. Those crappy conditions and third party resettlement is what makes the UK less desirable for irregular crossings, particularly by boat. Yes you will have some bleeding hearts acting on emotion complain in the short term. But in the medium term they'll get over it once the irregular crossings stop. Yes some people may die, but fewer than are dying currently.

@JohnHuxleySavage Your figures are both out dated and over a 12 year period. The UK spends 6x that amount PER YEAR on irregular border crossings. The delayed claims aren't by design. They're the combined result of reduced staff numbers during pandemic restrictions and a 750% increase in claimants per month. What the UK were seeing per year in 2018, is now two months worth of claims. That's why something has to be done to reduce numbers. Btw, according to home office figures between 2011 and 2018, 1/3 of irregular border crossings were illegal economic migrants not genuine asylum seekers. Between 2019 and 2021 (latest figures) 48% of irregular border crossings were illegal economic migrants not genuine refugees. Of those illegal economic migrants, 87% crossed via the channel. Genuine asylum seekers tend to come by air or road.

@FullFact548 So many words to say absolutely nothing. I'm so tired of empty buzz words and sock puppet accounts. What do you actually mean when you say "humane system". Give details, be specific.

Do you know how long it takes to recruit suitable candidates to process asylum claims? This isn't something any old person on the street can do.

@django3422 Yet again you're making the same empty argument that I've debunked many times before. Come back when you're willing to show who you are instead of hiding behind a sock puppet
