I knew a retired sergeant in the US Army and aside from his wife and kids the best part of his life were danger close and close air support. He once got pinned down by machine gun fire in Afghanistan according to him "the guy with the radio called in close air support and the next thing I know the hills were alive with the sounds of explosions" (which he sung to the tune of the Sound of Music)

@justaguy1679 very different wars and battles. For my buddy he was fighting insurgents and despite what the popular image many people have the insurgents were often poorly trained, fragmented, and while zealous they didnt have much discipline which si why they relied so much on IEDs, suicide bombings, and sniper attacks since real battles, even ambushes, often went poorly. So for him that battle was relatively low risk. I dont remember the details but insurgents were hiding in some brush or rocks or something like that while taking pot shots so they called in for support and the insurgents were reduced to a fine mist. That's got to be more fun then fighting a near peer adversary in a pitched battle while the enemy also has artillery and air support.
