I'll copy and paste my thoughts from another reply: Blaxploitation as a genre is problematic. And this is the basis of Coffee's charecter. It's complicated. I love Pam Grier, and many of the charecters she played ... but in terms of representation, Foxy Brown and Coffee weren't helpful. And of course that was the 70s, Blaxploitation era, and there wasn't many oppertunities for black actors outside of that. But that's partly why I feel Coffee wasn't a helpful portrayal, because it references a reductive period in African American cinema. Also, she isn't the only black charecter in that episode of Cowboy Bebop... and the others, 'Mushroom Samba' and 'Shaft', are also unhelpful portrayals. And as an aside, the first time we meet Coffee she's at a watermelon stand... so, I don't think it's the worst, but it's still problematic for a number of reasons.
And don't get me wrong, blaxploitation cinema is widely loved (some are much better than others) and are often referenced by black creators. Like I said, I'm a big fan of Pam Grier and Jim Kelly, they are legends in my eyes... so it's not a case of blaxploitation is bad and any reference to it is bad. Cultural representation is a nuanced discusion. I think there needs to be much more sensitivity and awareness when non-black people are representing blackness. I think that's what it comes down to. Afro Samurai (a charecter that also references blaxploitation), for instance, centres blackness, he's the main charecter and he has depth and substance. As well as the project being a 'creative collaboration', between Samuel L. Jackson, Takashi Okazaki, Gonzo, and RZA. So it was also informed by a black perspective.
As another commenter said, "it is about the nuanced differentiation between racist, insensitive, misinformed, and celebratory" - Josh

@darkrinji That was a condensed version of a discussion with another commenter on here that I have copy and pasted in answer to your query, which is why it was so long... but I take your point. It's more a reflection of the fact that this is not a binary debate. It's complicated and nuanced. In the video I said Coffee was 'unhelpfully reductive'. Which I stand by. If Mushroom Samba ep was written by/made by black creators, or if Afro Samurai was not, I don't think they would be the same. For the sake of argument, if they were, it wouldn't change my opinion. Non-black people are capable of accurate, or respectful cultural representation, and creators of colour are capable of negative representation. I loved Afro Samurai! It resonated with me. I felt connected with the charecter and cared about his fate in that story. That's the impact of a well written, substantive charecter, whether it's written by a POC or not. But, it's just the plain truth that POC will be better able to portray, or advise on, their lived experience, because they are the ones living that experience. I'm glad we're discussing this on here though, it's important to have these conversations, rather then just hurling insults. So I appreciate you asking about it - Josh

@zsht There's some great examples in the video. I think a big difference with Afro Samurai and Boondocks, is they were made by black creators (partially in the case of Afro Samurai). Like you said, cultural representation is a nuanced discusion. I think there needs to be much more sensitivity and awareness when non-black people are representing blackness. I think that's what it comes down to. Afro Samurai centres blackness, he's the main charecter and he has depth and substance. As well as the project being a 'creative collaboration', between Samuel L. Jackson, Takashi Okazaki, Gonzo, and RZA. So it was also informed by a black perspective. Boondocks was made by black people for black people, and certainly the early series (before it lost its way) are squarely rooted in respectful African American representation, Others may disagree, but this is imho - Josh
