@EpsteinsRope : That was a great comment. Interesting too. Of course, if we followed Putin’s logic we would be forced to conclude the reverse of his assertions: namely, that Russia therefore belongs to its founders, Ukraine. But we also know full well that these are only claims Putin has made to persuade his credulous population, not because he, “believes,” in anything.
By his own words, Russia should still be communist, as he wrote a whole essay on the fall of the Soviet Union as being the worst thing that ever happened to Russia. Probably ghost written? Though it is full of assumptions, logical fallacies and downright errors, so maybe it was just him?
His real interest was, is and always has been the wealth of Ukraine. They were just on the threshold of a new golden age in Ukraine, where companies like BP, Exxon and Shell, among others handed in reports saying there is as much fossil fuel wealth beneath Ukrainian soil and off the Crimean coast, as there is in Russia. The scientists and geologist teams for these oil companies were among the first to receive death threats and other intimidation tactics to scare them out of Ukraine, even before the Donbas and Crimean invasions began. But, combined with the Argon production (vital for microchip manufacture) that Ukraine has over 50% of the world’s supply of, and all that farming wealth, along with other rare Earth minerals, and you have a bonanza of prosperity on the verge of making Ukraine a major player on the world stage.
Putin knows he cannot sell these stolen resources on the world markets. But he could stop Ukraine from having access to them and take them out of any competition, whilst transporting tons of these materials, coal and the rare earth’s, from Donbas to Moscow power stations.
He and Xi probably sat in that box at the Winter Olympics plotting how between them, with Ukrainian Argon and Taiwanese chip manufacture, they could corner the world’s technology and become the dominant force together. But, China’s plans went to pot as they saw the furious resistance of the world to Putin’s Ukrainian HEIST and the reinvigoration of NATO.
In so far as history plays a role at all, in the hearts and minds of people, its distortion is a performative act, done for the benefit of the populations who remain behind Putin’s new Iron Curtain. The west doesn’t buy it. And westerners, I’m sorry to say, are not as concerned about history as easterners are, culturally speaking. They should be encouraged. And your comment is evidence of that. I too would love to see Jake’s take on it, which he has touched on at various times, with that fascinating historical map he shows us from time to time.
Slava Ukraine, my friend. 🇺🇦🔱🇬🇧
