@AnimeFan-ot7bu : No, you don’t sound cruel. Just ignorant.

@7171jay : My feeling is that the dam was so damaged already that it was already going to need billions of dollars worth of repairs. However, it’s not physically possible to blow it up except from the inside. Not without something tailor made for the job. Yet all witnesses agree there were no missiles, no sounds of bombing or missile strikes (something about which they are all pretty experienced by now) and the fact that Russians never warned their own troops down river is business as usual in Russia.

@paulouellette6934 : You might as well ask, “What is the benefit of invading Ukraine?” It doesn’t pay to think of Russian motives in adult terms. That’s not a pejorative expression either. It made sense to a group of gangsters within a group made up of lots of groups of gangsters, all competing against one another for resources and equipment and looking to pass on blame for any failures to their rivals. Someone saved his own ass by blowing that dam and he didn’t have a long term, “strategic goal,” in mind. Either that, or their mines went off out of sheer panic or neglect. Now you’re starting to get a sense of what it’s like to be a Russian citizen, and why it’s just easier to say, “I don’t talk about politics.” Just another gangster COWARD doing gangster COWARD stuff.

Thank you for your deep compassion, Jake. Memorable and heartbreaking coverage. This, yet another act of cowardice, by the Coward In Chief, Putin. Either it was abject panic, or they were deliberately keeping lots of their own troops out of the loop so they could deny any knowledge more plausibly. Now the world needs to warn Putin that they will treat any further such attacks the same as a nuclear attack. Especially by the nuclear power station. Maybe it’s time the west stepped in anyway?

@paulouellette6934 : To a Russian, it buys time. They know the Ukrainian armed forces will be needed for life saving and evacuation. The Russians probably panicked. Even if they did it accidentally, it was an accident of their own making, caused by the bombs they mined the dam with, breaking all of the laws of war. It was not something under Ukraine’s control. And all witnesses on both sides confirm the same two things: No missiles were heard or seen; yet a bomb blast was heard and some saw it.
