People have always called it the, “Torygraph.” But this is ridiculous. It’s actually, generally speaking, usually a good read. Johnson missed his opportunity when it would have been appropriate for him to take on such a role. That story about the EU standardising coffin sizes, etc, was part of a bet (so I heard) that was going on between right wing journalists; “How far can we go? How extreme and hyperbolic can our claims be before they get spiked?” They were just trying to outdo each other. Let’s be honest here. Johnson will barely show up to the office and occasionally submit an editorial which he will now know will never get spiked. But the paper will just go on as it did before. The problems will only occur if the Telegraph gets sued for something serious and he is expected to account for it. Or if he does something that brings his role into question. One or the other seem somehow inevitable in his hands. In a sense, it kind of puts him out of the public’s misery, certainly making him far less credible as a potentially returning political force around which the Tory screwballs accrete.
