  1. Harold Wilson once caught an egg in the face whilst addressing the Women’s Institute, back in the early 1970’s. They say he never even slowed down his speech but merely wiped his face whilst he talked and then added, “See how people can afford to waste eggs under a Labour government? She never could have afforded that egg under the Conservatives.” But, he was one of those people you seem to lament the passing of: an ideologue with a personality, who built a persona that played well with the press. I’m not so sure we should lament his type, personally? He always had that pipe in his mouth, but he never smoked it, except for the cameras. He was the first media savvy premier we had, really. A fundamentally decent man, but not one I would trust.

  2. Gordon Brown’s hot mic moment didn’t help him, but people just didn’t want to sit still for our democratic power being handed over privately to him from Blair, as if they had the right to make the premiership a private business deal. I know I voted against Labour that year because of that.
