@iamgreat1234 No. The majority of Singaporeans speak English. 48.3% of Singaporeans speak English frequently at home compared to 29.9% of Singaporeans who speak Mandarin frequently at home. English is the lingua franca of the country, almost everybody in the country knows how to speak it.

@iamgreat1234 Sorry but just because you have to hire Mandarin speaking Singaporeans does not mean most Singaporeans speak Mandarin. Are you aware that Singaporeans are ethnically diverse? Singaporeans are generally of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian descent and all Singaporeans learn English as their first language as English is the lingua franca of the country. English is the binding language of Singaporeans. The mother tongue languages of Mandarin (even though Hokkien, Teochew and other Chinese dialects are the actual mother tongue languages of the Chinese), Malay and Tamil are the languages taught as the second language in the Singaporean education system.

@iamgreat1234 Mandarin is the not the first language or original tongue of Singaporean Chinese. Most Singaporean Chinese come from southern Chinese backgrounds where other languages like Hokkien, Teochew and Hakka are spoken. Mandarin is not the native language of any of these Chinese groups. Mandarin was taught as a second language because Lee Kuan Yew wanted to unite the Singaporean Chinese groups under one common Chinese language because the Singaporean Malays were united under Malay and most Singaporean Indians (the majority who are Tamil) were united under Tamil.
