  1. Yes. We probably all did something similar; counting beans or what not. We just don't remember it because this is just a short phase. Once they have memorized single digit addition they'll move on to the normal method, then to applying that to 100's, and then to generalizing it to any magnitude.

  2. This is the same thing but an earlier stage before memorizing the single digit addition table and using counting instead of that. Pretty soon after this the kid will move on to the usual method, and then to generalize it to any order of magnitude.
