@Reflectionmaterial Mainly the fact that is doesn't seem to have a purpose. They were already not at the protest anymore. They were at that point, from a legal perspective, just free citizens who were ordered to walk away and complied with that order.

It probably also doesn't help that they are consistently insulting the police at these protests, chanting that the whole world hates them, they are fascists, they have blood on their hands, and whatnot. The police should control their emotions of course, but they are human beings and not infallible.

@Reflectionmaterial It does appear to me to be unlawful use of force, but it is under investigation by the authorities, and apparently at least this protester got a lawyer so I assume she is going to press charges. Time will tell what the courts say.

@bertnl530 They could have gone home but not at that point anymore. They were arrested and at that point the police certainly can force you in a bus.

@Reflectionmaterial While it isn't the norm in any way, there's of course no denying that sometimes police crosses the line - as happens anywhere in the world.

@Reflectionmaterial There's also footage of the incident, so it's not just based on what she's saying. I get what you are saying but legally speaking they weren't at an illegal protest anymore. They were arrested and released, which makes them free citizens like any other. They were ordered to leave from that location, which I assume itself is fine, and they appear to have complied with that. I understand the police runs out of patience at some point, but they do have to keep themselves in check. Honestly, I couldn't do it. These particular protesters would drive me mad with their constant taunting, disobeying, vandalism, etc. So I get it, but they still have to follow protocols and laws.

It's been on the Dutch national news. Police misconduct happens everywhere sometimes, but it is hardly ever international news.

The police should act within the confines of law though. I agree these protesters were way out of line, but that is not a carte blanche for the police to do whatever they want. That's also why the police is investigating this incident themselves.

The whole debate was basically every party going "How can we use these events to push through the things we wanted anyway?". That even applies to the whole mayor thing, as Wilders has already often said he wants her gone. Luckily the minister was level headed enough to ensure that wouldn't happen.

They didn't abduct anyone. They arrested people for participating in an illegal protest. Releasing them somewhere outside of the city center is common practice in such cases because jailing hundreds of people at once simply isn't practical and would cost an enormous amount of resources. All of that is normal. What happened afterwards is not.

@zitsumo9140 In some cases, yes. Such a decision can be challenged in court. They tried that and failed. You can still disagree with that court of course, but you do have to obey it. It's not like we live in an authoritative regime where you cannot protest. There are hundreds of protests in Amsterdam each year, and most of them without any issues. There was a very temporary ban and only in Amsterdam for safety reasons. The could have gone to The Hague, or they could have waited one day because that's how soon the ban was lifted. And despite the court's decision the government decided to be lenient and offer to take the protest elsewhere. And they ignored that as well. Amsterdam is a very liberal city but if you are hell-bent on defying authority it will be answered.

@chancelloryusuf That's actually not what happened first. When you perceive media to be biased, be careful not to blindly believe the opposing narrative. The world is complex and media is often knowingly or unknowingly influenced by different agendas trying to spin the narrative.

@lyle4244 Yeah, but that isn't an issue that's at play here. Our police doesn't have military equipment or training. Our military police, unlike in most countries, does have a few civilian police tasks, but this isn't military police.

@albefuctivino1488 Yes, never heard of internal reviews? Virtually every organisation has that when something goes wrong. The police is such a large organisation that they have a department dedicated to that, called internal affairs. People with jobs are generally aware of this mechanism. Protesters might not be.

That's nonsense and you know it. When someone is trying to break into your house I bet you will call the cops with zero worries about the cops and anxiously wait for their arrival.

@nadiakabbani990 They wear masks for their own safety because a lot of cops face retribution, often caused by being doxxed online through some video taken out of context.

More likely these cops were just unleashing their own frustrations after stressful days of overworking (for many in a city that isn't theirs) thanks in part due to protesters that refuse to obey even court orders.

@adrien5834 You are the one looking into this with a preconceived narrative of what happened. First you deny there have been hospitalizations at all, then when confronted with the truth, you immediately ask to which group they belonged? And then to prepare yourself for the inevitable, you go and assume things aren't reported. So that, even if you did get the answer, you wouldn't have to believe it. Why would you do that if not for an attempt to validate your own preconceived story? And why do you have "no doubt" that "quite a few" Dutch people were more seriously injured? Do you never have doubt about things you just make up on the spot?

@calicocat8213 Hospitalize (verb) (British English also "hospitalise") To send somebody to a hospital for treatment. Also, what's funny about that? You can get shot and discharged the same day. In this case the worst injury was a broken leg which was according to the police "a matter of luck".

@zannabannana The burgemeester did impose the ban. Such a decision by the burgemeester can be challenged in court. The court in this case ruled that the decision was made in accordance with law and thus upheld the ban.

@chow-chihuang4903 Maybe you shouldn't focus on biased news channels. There is a lot of context left out here. This protest was banned, which was confirmed by the court. They were nonetheless offered an alternative location. They went to the city center anyway. They were then given ample opportunity to leave, and warned that violence would be used otherwise. This is after a week of countless incidents and many protests in which police from all over the country is dragged to Amsterdam, many of whom were working extra shifts and over hours. Throughout this illegal protest they were chanting insults at the police. And all that despite the fact that they could've simply waited a day because the ban was lifted the very next day. This group of protesters seek out confrontation with the cops. They've been doing that numerous times this year, with lots of vandalism and violence. They do this because they know they can then spin the narrative to make it appear as though they are oppressed, and get the media attention for their cause. I can't tell if these specific 2 minutes that they filmed are justified violence. It appears to me that it isn't. Police sometimes crosses the line. That happens everywhere. This incident is also under investigation by the police. If people however spin this as if we live in some dictatorship where they can't protest, that's utter nonsense.

We do have military police in the Netherlands, but these were regular police. You rarely encounter the military police here, and even when you do they often don't carry military gear. So I really don't see the relevance of your comment to this situation.
