It's a little more complex than that. Forest fires do sometimes occur from spontaneous ignition. That is due to heat caused by decomposing material, which can kickstart a chain reaction that causes material on the ground to heat up until it ignites. That is essentially the same process as what sometimes causes compost piles and haystacks to catch fire. Dryness is a factor in that, but not in the way you'd expect. This does not happen in very dry forests, as moist is needed for sufficient decomposing. Circumstances are ideal in a warm dry period after a warm wet period.

@alexdavis1541 Right. The decomposing itself does not generate sufficient heat, but the steam arising from it can cause a reaction with the material on top of it, which in turn generates more heat. How that reaction exactly works, you'll have to ask a chemist.

@alexdavis1541 With that said, it likely caused by humans, either by arson or accidentally. I'm just saying it does in general occur spontaneously as well, and it does not have to get 370 degrees in the air for that.
