Comments by "JBird" (@jbird4478) on "Angela Merkel warns of coronavirus mutations and defends lockdown extension | DW News" video.
This virus has an infection fatality rate of 0.23%. The German government paid scientists in the beginning to exaggerate the dangers in order to justify the rules they made. The schools should open. This is ridiculous. For 99% of people this virus is harmless. In my country 15000 people died with covid, among them only 135 are below 70 and without underlying condition. Everybody who dies with covid is counted as a victim of covid even if they die from something else. The hospital numbers they publish too are those with covid regardless of the reason they are in the hospital.

@olbradley No, it's not. The IFR is from the WHO bulletin. The report about the governments telling scientists to exaggerate is from Welt am Sonntag. And the numbers I mentioned, and the way those are counted are from the health authorities in the Netherlands. You may disagree with my opinion, but the facts are the facts.

@moonshadow7057 I read that, but that's very arbitrary cherry-picking in order to make a very strange comparison.
3
@moonshadow7057 The majority would have died anyway. Yes, many more people died than otherwise would have, but the vast majority are elderly and people with underlying conditions. That is not a believe. That is what the data shows.
3
@moonshadow7057 And if you insist on making a comparison with that arbitrary number, you should also consider that the world population is now roughly 3 times bigger. So it better compares to smoking. An estimated 7 million people die each year as a consequence of that.

@Alfadrottning86 What is racist about his claims? And btw... after that accusation you unironically continue with "your kind" in case you didn't realize.

@stephensonjoe Wow.. prejudiced much?

@olbradley 1) WHO Article ID: BLT.20.265892 2) Welt am Sonntag, "Innenministerium spannte Wissenschaftler für Rechtfertigung von Corona-Maßnahmen ein", 2021-02-07 (and every other serious media) 3) ~15000 deaths and 135 < 70 and healthy: RIVM COVID-19 weekly report from february 2nd 2021 (p 72) (in Dutch) 4) Coronadashboard of the Netherlands, accounting of numbers (in Dutch) 5) Hospitals counting everyone: Answers to questions of the Parliament, de Jonge (Dutch minister of health), february 10th 2021, regarding incorrect numbers of hospital admissions (in Dutch).

@olbradley The WHO document is in English. The sources where I mentioned they're in Dutch, are - surprise - in Dutch. Obviously, every death rate is a best estimate. Yes, it's a median of a large number of data sets. That's how these kind of meta-studies work. That document indeed says nothing about the other statements I made, that's why I went through the trouble of finding back the sources for you. The danger being exaggerated on request from the government is reported by Welt am Sontag, like I said. That's in German, but many newspapers wrote about it.
2
@olbradley So maybe you should rephrase your "completely and utterly false" to something like "requiring a little nuance".

The German government paid scientist to exaggerate the dangers of corona in order to justify the policies. Source: Welt Am Sonntag. Stop listening to them. They lie.

@marialana3502 There are medicine: HCQ, ivermectine, among others. HCQ and ivermectine are both used and approved for other diagnoses a long time already. They aren't yet approved for the treatment of covid, but both have studies with promising results. The vaccine on the other hand is still completely in experimental phase, and no long term data and only limited short term data exists of it.
1
@boudiccaprasutagus5709 I don't know about the other countries but in South Africa it's not. There's a lot of misinformation about ivermectin and a lot of outrages censorship under the guise of fighting misinformation. This is a highly controversial topic right now. Have a look at the talk page on wikipedia to get the picture. In the US, like in most countries, doctors are always allowed to use off-label medicine on their patients, but it's not allowed to advertise off-label use.
1
@boudiccaprasutagus5709 I don't think it is mandatory anywhere. However, EU citizens risk becoming second class citizens if the vaccine passport is indeed going to be used to restrict internal travel. And there are even talks about using it to limit access to festivals and events and such. For health care workers, at least here in Holland, it's not mandatory but the employer is allowed to fire them if they refuse.
1
@olbradley It also mentions that most of the data sets used are from places where the mortality rate is higher than the global average, and that "If one could sample equally from all locations globally, the median infection fatality rate might be even substantially lower than the 0.23% observed in my analysis."

@moonshadow7057 Estimates of the casualties of WW2 range from 35 to 60 million on a world population estimated at 2.3 billion in 1940. [Encyclopedia Britannica] There is one thing comparable. Many politicians declared we are in war with the virus, and as with any war, truth is its first victim.
1
@moonshadow7057 I hadn't read your second comment yet. Maybe you should follow some history lessons, or at least visit a war museum before saying such things.

@baqaqipekhebi7148 What a ridiculous appeal to irrational fear.

The Dutch government declined an offer for a hospital ship including medical staff and equipment for COVID-19 patients that successfully helped during the outbreak in Italy in the spring last year. The explanation offered in Parliament was that the procedure to convert the foreign medical licenses would take too long. The owner of the ship, who is Dutch himself, says much of the staff actually is Dutch and the government simply told him his offer wasn't needed. And yet we are in lockdown since half december. There are currently 537 patients with covid in intensive care here, and 1415 in regular hospital admission. That is slightly less than 2 and 5 per hospital respectively. 17 million people are in lockdown. You don't have to be an expert to call bs on this.

Because those people think mask don't work, are unnecessary, or do more harm than good.
1
@GaganSingh-nx2yv I think most of them are against mandatory masks, not masks in general. And they have reasons for that, not just a "bad example and excuse".
