Here in the Netherlands such a parallel society is built by a political party. They got 5% of votes mostly due to their stance on covid. Unfortunately, they have some other opinions that push a lot of people away. They just has a Christmas market while the rest of the country is in lockdown. They did get a hefty fine for that though (10.000 euro, about 15.000 CAD). I wonder how long that's going to last though, because they are openly calling for civil disobedience from within the parliament. They've been to court a few times for violating covid restrictions, but more importantly are speaking truths. Of course the media either ignores them or ridicules them, but that won't work forever. At first they were critical, you could say, about the rules, but now they are calling it for what it is: a hoax, calling the rest of the parliament misguided or delusional, and calling members of government criminals who are orchestrating a coup d'etat with the WEF. That's going to be hard for the media to keep ignoring.

@YraxZovaldo "Best onderzocht ooit" Tuurlijk, joh.

@Reflectionmaterial There's also footage of the incident, so it's not just based on what she's saying. I get what you are saying but legally speaking they weren't at an illegal protest anymore. They were arrested and released, which makes them free citizens like any other. They were ordered to leave from that location, which I assume itself is fine, and they appear to have complied with that. I understand the police runs out of patience at some point, but they do have to keep themselves in check. Honestly, I couldn't do it. These particular protesters would drive me mad with their constant taunting, disobeying, vandalism, etc. So I get it, but they still have to follow protocols and laws.

@dawsie The Jews were forced out of Israel by the Romans, not by Arabs. In modern history, Israel has very much acted as an occupier though. It's a complex situation. Yes, you can find tons of Jewish artifacts in Israel, and there are places that are considered sacred by them in Israel. But the same thing applies to Muslims. They have been living there for centuries, and they too have many places they consider sacred. Gaza is effectively an open air prison nowadays. You can certainly put part of the blame on Hamas for that, but Israel is equally to blame. Who's not to blame though, are the normal families that are forced to live there because the borders are shut. Nor the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians that de facto live in exile outside of Israel, separated from their families. You can't "simply pay" for electricity and water in an area that is almost completely cut off from the world, run by a terrorist organization, and frankly one of the worst hellholes you can currently find on earth. Israel has had Gaza cut off for a long time, and as a result of that it is economically devastated. And now they have deliberately cut off water supplies as an act of aggression. That is a war crime under international law, irrespective of the numerous atrocities committed by Hamas. Don't be equally naive and blind-sided as the dumb lefties in this video. There's no right and wrong side in this conflict. Only misery.

Indeed. Except for the Byzantine-Ottoman wars, the Bulgarian-Ottoman wars, the Serbian-Ottoman war, the war with the Timurid Empire, a civil war, the war with Safavid Iran, with Egypt, the Kingdom of Hungary, Austria, Persia, the Russo-Turkish war, the war with Spain, the burning of Moscow, the war with Cyprus, with Malta, Austria again, the Great Turkish War, another war with Russia, the Egyptian-Ottoman war, the Bulgarian massacre, the Balkan Wars, the Armenian genocide, and the minor issue of World War 1 it was a peaceful bunch, those Ottomans. Though I might have missed a few incidents.

www [dot] state [dot] gov/fact-sheet-activity-at-the-wuhan-institute-of-virology/ (in the Internet Archive, original removed after inauguration day):
For more than a year, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has systematically prevented a transparent and thorough investigation of the COVID-19 pandemic’s origin, choosing instead to devote enormous resources to deceit and disinformation. Nearly two million people have died. Their families deserve to know the truth. Only through transparency can we learn what caused this pandemic and how to prevent the next one.
The U.S. government does not know exactly where, when, or how the COVID-19 virus—known as SARS-CoV-2—was transmitted initially to humans. We have not determined whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan, China.
The virus could have emerged naturally from human contact with infected animals, spreading in a pattern consistent with a natural epidemic. Alternatively, a laboratory accident could resemble a natural outbreak if the initial exposure included only a few individuals and was compounded by asymptomatic infection. Scientists in China have researched animal-derived coronaviruses under conditions that increased the risk for accidental and potentially unwitting exposure.
The CCP’s deadly obsession with secrecy and control comes at the expense of public health in China and around the world. The previously undisclosed information in this fact sheet, combined with open-source reporting, highlights three elements about COVID-19’s origin that deserve greater scrutiny:
Illnesses inside the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV):
- The U.S. government has reason to believe that several researchers inside the WIV became sick in autumn 2019, before the first identified case of the outbreak, with symptoms consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illnesses. This raises questions about the credibility of WIV senior researcher Shi Zhengli’s public claim that there was “zero infection” among the WIV’s staff and students of SARS-CoV-2 or SARS-related viruses.
- Accidental infections in labs have caused several previous virus outbreaks in China and elsewhere, including a 2004 SARS outbreak in Beijing that infected nine people, killing one.
- The CCP has prevented independent journalists, investigators, and global health authorities from interviewing researchers at the WIV, including those who were ill in the fall of 2019. Any credible inquiry into the origin of the virus must include interviews with these researchers and a full accounting of their previously unreported illness.
Research at the WIV:
- Starting in at least 2016 – and with no indication of a stop prior to the COVID-19 outbreak – WIV researchers conducted experiments involving RaTG13, the bat coronavirus identified by the WIV in January 2020 as its closest sample to SARS-CoV-2 (96.2% similar). The WIV became a focal point for international coronavirus research after the 2003 SARS outbreak and has since studied animals including mice, bats, and pangolins.
- The WIV has a published record of conducting “gain-of-function” research to engineer chimeric viruses. But the WIV has not been transparent or consistent about its record of studying viruses most similar to the COVID-19 virus, including “RaTG13,” which it sampled from a cave in Yunnan Province in 2013 after several miners died of SARS-like illness.
- WHO investigators must have access to the records of the WIV’s work on bat and other coronaviruses before the COVID-19 outbreak. As part of a thorough inquiry, they must have a full accounting of why the WIV altered and then removed online records of its work with RaTG13 and other viruses.
Secret military activity at the WIV:
- Secrecy and non-disclosure are standard practice for Beijing. For many years the United States has publicly raised concerns about China’s past biological weapons work, which Beijing has neither documented nor demonstrably eliminated, despite its clear obligations under the Biological Weapons Convention.
- Despite the WIV presenting itself as a civilian institution, the United States has determined that the WIV has collaborated on publications and secret projects with China’s military. The WIV has engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017.
- The United States and other donors who funded or collaborated on civilian research at the WIV have a right and obligation to determine whether any of our research funding was diverted to secret Chinese military projects at the WIV.
Today’s revelations just scratch the surface of what is still hidden about COVID-19’s origin in China. Any credible investigation into the origin of COVID-19 demands complete, transparent access to the research labs in Wuhan, including their facilities, samples, personnel, and records.
As the world continues to battle this pandemic – and as WHO investigators begin their work, after more than a year of delays – the virus’s origin remains uncertain. The United States will continue to do everything it can to support a credible and thorough investigation, including by continuing to demand transparency on the part of Chinese authorities.

@warlockpaladin2261 The only real measurement is benchmarking though, as performance depends a lot on what exactly is supposed to be done. Flops measures floating point operations, which for a lot of software is almost or completely irrelevant. As for "practical" speed, what the average consumer is going to notice most nowadays, is not the speed of the CPU, but the speed of IO, and the quality (or lack thereof) of software running on the computer. If you manage to install only software from the 80's/90's on a modern desktop, it will feel as though everything responds instantaneously. Unfortunately, nowadays a lot of programmers seem to think resources are practically limitless (which is kind of true until you consider there may be 50 processes running that are written with the same mindset). Modern desktops are basically like using a space shuttle to go to the grocery store. It's impressive, sure, but it's a bit of waste to take 1GB of memory on a 16-core supercomputer to display funny pictures of cats.

@wat2875 A large part of the population has already been exposed. Estimates in my country are that 10% of people has antibodies, but that is just a portion of those who have been exposed. There's 17 million people here. The number of people who died under the age of 70 and without underlying conditions so far from covid: 135. This pandemic is blown widely out of proportion. There are less people in the hospital here than there were during the 2017/2018 flu epidemic, and yet we are in lockdown, have a curfew, and an ungodly amount of regulation that deeply affects all of society. This has to end, because the damage done this way is enormous. And the government does not have the authority to tell people when they can go outside, who they can meet, etc. Elderly that are at the end of their lives anyway are left alone out of fear they might die. This "new normal" is destroying the fabric of society. Young people are getting learning disadvantages, people are getting lonely, poor, depressed, and all those things are known to decrease life expectancy; or in other words cost lives. And that is in one of the richest countries in the world. In poor countries the effects will be far worse.

@cloudpoint0 Oh, sorry, my "we" is the Netherlands, but the countries around me are mostly in lockdowns as well. I don't know about Toronto but in many places the number of cases hitting records in the fall is due to much more testing.
The hospitalization numbers generally give a better insight. In my country though, they changed the way those are counted. Since the summer, they count everyone with a positive test result in the hospital, whereas at the start they only counted those who were in the hospital for covid problems. So now, if you're fine but break a leg and test positive, you're counted in those numbers. This amounts to almost half the cases being in the hospital for totally different reasons, giving a very misleading picture of the situation. When you simply look at the real numbers here, we had a mild epidemic last year, but this fall and winter is not really different from a heavy flu season.
Most people try to avoid as many cases for noble reasons. However, I highly doubt that's the governments' reason. They know very well that when you delay the spread, you also prolong it. That's also one of the reasons the WHO recommends to only use lockdown to safe time while ramping up the health care facilities. In the report our health authorities make to advice the government last year, it is already explained how the lockdown actually increased the chance of a second wave. Spring last year, the lockdown may have been understandable, but now they keep is in lockdown because the government says a third wave "is coming". Meanwhile, our health minister is saying "the vaccine will be our ticket to freedom."

@darkshaman7087 The test measures genetic material from the covid virus. That, however, does not have to mean you are infected. There is a lot of uncertainty as to exactly how accurate these tests are. Normally, people with pneumonia don't get tested with exactly what virus they are infected. They normally take samples from just a few people and use that to estimate how much flu there is. Because the entire way this is handled is now different, these statistics of the flu are all messed up. People with pneumonia now don't go to a doctor, but they go and get a covid test and that's it. It the test says positive, they have covid, if not then they don't. Either way it usually just heals. The people that measure the flu can still get some samples, but they have no idea what portion of all people with pneumonia this represents.
The reasons why you never heard of variants is because normally this is never mentioned by the media. Variants are only interesting for scientists. They exist, from both the flu and covid, but for the general public that doesn't matter. Just like you've probably never heard of any of the different viruses that cause the common cold. The media is now just using it as yet another way to make scary videos about covid. And you are right not to trust the government. They want us to be scared. Not because the virus really is that dangerous, but because it allows them to do things the people would otherwise never allow.

@jharvey9898 Well, I just checked the numbers, and while there is a big difference, Trump also received 2.6 million dollars from pharma in 2020, McConnell $560,000, Perdue $550,000, Loeffler $525,000, and the list goes on and on. Of course, Biden is the undisputed number one, having received 8.4 million dollars from big pharma in 2020.

Tegen: CDA, D66, CU, VVD, PvdA, Gl (=6)

@daydreonmckinney I know what video you mean, and it was indeed misrepresented by a lot of media. However, that is far from all that happened, and also far from all the videos there are of things that happened. It's crazy how people act as if because of that one video, now they know "what really happened". Numerous things happened in an escalation of tensions and violence. The police knew about that incident too, and the police you see driving by was responding to another emergency call, called for backup because of this, which unfortunately arrived too late to catch them. Body cams wouldn't have helped much, because the police being unable to be at the right place at the right time was part of the problem. They were prepared for clashes between groups, which is usual with hooligans, and they mostly prevented those. They were not prepared for what they described as "hit and run" actions on individuals in random places.
