The number of Ukrainian and Russian soldiers killed or wounded since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022 is approaching 500,000, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing unnamed US officials.
Officials warned that casualty figures remain difficult to estimate because Moscow is believed to routinely underestimate its war dead and wounded, and kyiv does not publish official figures, the newspaper said.
Russian military casualties are approaching 300,000, of which 120,000 are dead and between 170,000 and 180,000 wounded, according to the newspaper. Ukrainian casualties are close to 70,000 and the wounded are between 100,000 and 120,000, he adds.
