The number of Ukrainian and Russian soldiers killed or wounded since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022 is approaching 500,000, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing unnamed US officials.
Officials cautioned that casualty figures remain difficult to estimate because Moscow is believed to routinely underestimate its war dead and wounded, and kyiv does not publish official figures, the newspaper said.
Russian military casualties are approaching 300,000, of whom 120,000 are killed and 170,000 to 180,000 wounded, according to the newspaper. Ukrainian casualties are approaching 70,000, with between 100,000 and 120,000 wounded, it adds.
The NYT quoted officials as saying the casualty count had risen after Ukraine launched a counterattack earlier this year.
The Ukrainian army on Thursday claimed progress in its counteroffensive against Russian forces on the southeastern front. Kiev said its forces had liberated a city, the first such success since July 27, noting the challenge it faces advancing through heavily mined Russian defensive lines without long-range air support.
There was no immediate response from Ukrainian officials to Reuters requests for comment. Russia had no immediate comment on the report"
