I think fear of a real-world SkyNet is overblown. You don't need to worry about an AI like that existing because it likely never will. Humans just lack the intelligence to create an artificial intelligence. However, what you do need to worry about is the technology being used as a cudgel to beat people down with. Consider how cheaply and easily you can build a drone these days, and that it's relatively easy to incorporate a satellite transceiver and a camera. Then consider that it can be hooked up to a remote database running some NN software to perform image recognition and determine what is and isn't a human. Follow that thought through to its conclusion and you get what the real fear is, because the machine won't operate on its own, but humans are very likely to use it in that way anyhow.

@codahighland It doesn't matter if we're talking about captcha or recaptcha, they're all security theater because a human can initiate the process of solving them anyway and set a bot loose. You claim you stopped the spambots, but for how long. I'd wager either not long, or they just got bored.
