  14. I worked at a vegetarian restaurant in Japan for 7 years. There are 2 normal ways to say "vegetarian" in Japanese: 「ベジェタリアン」OR「採食主義者」(sai shoku shu gi sha). There are some derogatory ways too, like phrases that translate into "grass eater" etc.

  20.  @mztokyo7630  mz, That used to be the case. However, starting around 2015, the rules changed so you had to show 3 most recent consecutive years of over 3,000,000 jpy income each year. Then in 2019 they added the rule that you have to show most recent 2 years of National health and pension payments. Then later, they extended the income rule to 5 years. . Japan does not want foreigners to stay permanently.

  22.  @eFrog27  Efrog, there are almost zero vegetarian restaurants in Japan. Admittedly there are several in Tokyo, a few less in Kansai, and almost zero everywhere else. I worked 7 years at a vegetarian restaurant in Osaka, many years ago. . Buddhism is actually not believed by very many in Japan. I would guess that only 10 to 15% of the population really follows it. It is just a cultural thing, to visit ancestor graves etc. Japan is much more deeply involved with Shinto religion, altho again, there are few true believers in that religion, as most just observe the festivals and pray for good luck at shrines etc. Probably around 80% or more of Japanese are really Agnostic or Atheist.

  26. I had private lessons at a small language school, and it was great as it was 100% tailored for me. Rural Japan is nice, quiet, and people are a bit friendly to tourists, but once you live there, you find out quickly that you are to follow everything they say or your life will be made difficult.

  28. We need all the true missionaries we can get. Be careful tho, there are lots of wanna-be missionaries in Japan that stay a few years, make some friends who become church members, then go back and their friends go back to their old life. We must be a vessel for the Holy Spirit to use, so those coming to Christ don't see us as the main attraction.

  30. @J Anda Anda, Unix is saying traditional marriage is "outdated", when it was traditional marriage culture that got Japan to be number 8 or 9 in the world in population in the first place. . No country will prosper long-term without traditional marriage.

  31. Claude, your recommendation is the best I've read on this video. There are lots of ancient historical things in Asuka area, and renting a bike to tour them all and just enjoy the laid-back Japanese countryside is very special.

  37. Very few of the foreigners in this video live in the countryside. People treat you differently if they see you as a visitor than they do if they see you as a resident.

  40.  @ethanpope410  ethan, that's great that you are considering coming to Japan to teach English. You will need a 4-year degree to get a visa. Be prepared to understand that most English teaching jobs in Japan pay roughly 20 - 24K (usd) per year.

  41. Kansai, thanks for your long post explaining things. I've lived in Kansai for nearly 3 decades, and what you write sounds similar to what I've discovered. With the current usd/jpy rate tho, 100,000jpy is only around 700usd. The average salary in Japan now is about half what it is in America. However, there are many ways to save, as you don't need a car if you live in a city, you can get cheap apts under 40,000jpy/month, etc. . My big problem is that the Japanese govt. is getting stricter and stricter regarding permanent visas, so unless one gets hired by a big company (or university), or else marries a Japanese, the prospects of obtaining a PR visa are slim.

  43.  @Mwoods2272  Good point, Maurice. Actually, languists have said that each syllable in Japanese is spoken roughly 50% faster than in English. It takes many more syllables in Japanese to get the same information conveyed as in English, so the actual time spent is roughly the same. . Personally, I cannot stand to listen to normal speed English anymore, so this video, along with all other English ones, I put at 1.5x. Thank you Youtube!

  44.  @ashwinbhagat384  ashwin, Japanese don't hate Buddhism. In fact, when asked what their religion is, more Japanese will say "Buddhist" than any other religion. . Japanese Buddhism has a god, which is quite different from Indian Buddhism (I think). Buddhism in Japan is associated with funerals, so has a dark image. . But Buddhism in Japan is mixed in with Shinto so much, that sometimes it is really hard even for Japanese to tell the difference. I still remember a conversation I heard among 4 elderly ladies recently discussing a place they weren't sure if it was a temple or a shrine!

  49. nihal, some people in the video were not telling the truth of the matter. The facts are, salaries in Japan have actually FALLEN just slightly over the last 33 years. Prices have increased maybe 50% over that period for some basic things like food, but the prices for many things like houses etc. have fallen.
