@theinktician inktician, there seem to be two main ideas vying for the supremacy - one of which is that Japan needs to severely restrict the number of foreigners living in Japan, and the other saying that Japan should be more like foreign countries and be acceptive of foreigners.

Seems like the first foreigner who goes on welfare in Japan causes a huge debate about how foreigners are coming to Japan to fleece the Japanese. My take on that is a bit simplistic, I admit, but it's kind of like many Japanese are happy to have foreigners here as long as the foreigners are working, in good health, and in general adding something monetarily to Japanese society. When those foreigners are on the receiving end, then sayonara.
But yes, I know this mindset applies to native Japanese people as well, as I've helped a number of homeless Japanese people over the years.

I could get a permanent visa now if the rules were the same as they were in 2014, or even if the same as spring 2019. But not with the rules added that summer.
