  2.  @vandysfam vandy, your advice is mostly spot-on, but remember that there are many Japanese, usually men, who are happier being with a westerner IF that westerner's Japanese is worse than their English.

  7. ernest, As an American who has lived in Japan a long time, I feel very, very similar. I was even told by a Japanese in Japan the other day that I was being too polite! Guess I need to work on that some more.
