There were tons of English signs in Tokyo in the 90s.

You have caught on to Japan's two-facedness very quickly.
11
Tourists are helping prop up the jpy.
10
@EinTheEin Ein, sounds like you would appreciate North Korea.
8
@LeoVital Leo, Tourism is a definitely bigger than a "tiny part" of the Japanese economy. Foreigners dropped 5.8 TRILLION jpy in just the first 9 months of this year, so this year's total will be more than the govt. spends on its military.

@GathersNoMoss Moss, I wrote something a bit harsher to Alex for his nasty remarks, but it seems Youtube has deleted it. Agreed with yours 100%.
5
Voice of reason., Glad you had a good time. If you don't mind, can you give an idea of what parts of Japan you visited?
5
Very true.
5
@galaxygo5 kuki, No. Next question.

@pcho93 pcho, I've seen some reports of Vietnamese young people going back because wages are about the same for some jobs in Vietnam. Wages for teachers hasn't budged in 35 years, and maybe even gone down a bit, but the price of rice is almost 3 times higher!
3
@_sparrowhawk sparrow, Are you trying to say you don't remember Tokyo in the 90s either, just like the original poster? . Or are you trying to say that wages have increased noticably in the past 35 years?
3
@smithdan5729 smith, I got the vibe that katzen is just looking for free English lessons, as his writing is much worse than Meow's, who made one weird mistake, yet keeps ranting and whining and basically saying nothing of value. . BTW, agreed with your comment. . Do you have any good ideas on how to mitigate the problem of overtourism, or do you even see it as a problem?
2
@roadsofjapan6009 roads, if you want to play the "lived here longer", then you are probably my kohai. Your view is mistaken.
2
You need an award for most ridiculous comment of the day!
2
@Taydar Taydar, you are 100% correct when you write that Britain made countries better. My friends in India tell me that the infrastructure the British built is still about the only infrastructure they have in their NorthEastern region, as the Indian govt. doesn't do much for them. Also, Indians were always fighting each other all the time, and Great Britain made them one, cohesive country.
2
virus, nobody is making Japan awful. Don't let the commenters and biased news reports give you a bad impression.
2
@Surftouka Surf, What is "honestly sad" about acting like yourself? . Have you forgotten that Japanese tourists also have been singled out for acting bad in the past in foreign countries?
2
@megadesu69 mega, "Don't be daft" when you are the one who wants to make a ridiculous law. . Nice try to turn the tables, but your try failed, just like your ridiculous suggestion. .
1
@smithdan5729 smith, my foreigner friend owned several B&Bs (rentals) in Kyoto, riding the big wave of tourism until Kyoto hotel owners called on the govt. to clamp down on rental B&Bs, virtually making it impossible now. So who wins? Rich hotel owners.

@katzen_man katzen, you are rude and incorrect. Congratulations.

@katzen_man katzen, 精神科に行って診てもらって下さい。

@88SD david, pretty much nothing of what you wrote is true. Yes, Japanese tourists were notorious in the 80s, but perhaps that was before your time.
1
@Frietuurs Frie, Everyone is "here now".
1
@88SD 88SD who used to be david, "pretty much nothing of what you wrote is true. Yes, Japanese tourists were notorious in the 80s, but perhaps that was before your time." .
1
Exactly! Japan's two-facedness.
1
@jaybee4288 jay, and Japan isn't what is was 20 years ago, or 30 years ago, or 40 years ago, or 10 minutes ago...
1
@Surftouka Surf, you are correct that this video doesn't really make clear what is wrong with tourists' actions. . Yes, in the 80s, there were many reports of ill-behaved Japanese tourists in foreign countries. That's OK, as long as no one gets hurt. . I disagree with your "respect culture" comment. People are people. Let them be people, as long as they aren't breaking any laws.
1
@Alex_Gordon Alex, you need some professional anger management counseling. Jesus Christ can fix that for you, and make you free.

@rabbit251 rabbit speaks from experience, and not the wannabes that flood the comment section.

Awww.

No, your view is mistaken.

@ykles24 ykles, People are people. Why not understand that?
