  1. True. Some points. 1. Reforms in the military are necessary with the tech advancements and changing warfare methods. 2. India can’t go thin overnight with two nuclear armed and belligerent adversaries on our 4000 Kms long land borders. Boots on ground is a must on these borders, at least in the short to medium terms. 3. Quality of intake and basic training methods have to change. 4. Tour of duty does not aim to reduce the strength of the Armed Forces. 5. The stated intention of reduction of pension bills should not be the primary reason for changes. Also have to look at organization and pension bills of Defence civilians employed, most of whom are redundant with use of technology for administration. 6. Change is the only permanence. Even “good old days” have a shelf life. Tailpiece: Fervently hope that the Indian opposition parties (now and forever) respond rather than react.
