  1. While choosing a religion is, thankfully, the prerogative of an individual, it is not the answer to stop crimes against the deprived. The deprivation is because of the economy and not due to caste or religious differences. In the case of the unfortunate Hathra’s case the HC asked the authorities (Paraphrased) “Would this have happened if the victim was from a rich family”. Religious conversions over centuries have not improved the living conditions. Uniform civil code will help differentiate society based solely on economy, to facilitate more equity in distribution of wealth. It is time for India to end differentiation and officious discrimination based on caste and religion. Improved living conditions (Roti, kapda, makkan) will automatically reduce crimes – even the Hathras’ type.
