Snehesh, A good account of events etc.. as usual. The incident in Mon, is unfortunate and regrettable. The families of the victims should be cared for. The inquiry should not stop with the elite Army Unit, which has an exemplary record of operations and can’t be expected to kill civilians on purpose. Let me explain. The issue is more than that meets the eye. It has been more than seven decades since India is an independent Nation. In many areas in the North and North East the Indian Army has been entrusted with the responsibility of containing the insurgents. An unacceptable situation in a democracy, which clearly indicates that the democratic and diplomatic processes have not been employed efficiently by the elected Governments. The Nation can’t expect the Armed Forces to do that job ad nauseum. The responsibility for this unfortunate and regrettable incident lies even outside of the Army unit. Tail piece: While we have a bureaucracy with immense authority and no responsibility, we expect the Armed Forces to be responsible without authority. Let us accept that AFSPA is a sham as it provides no authority and very little protection to Armed Forces – remember they are dealing with their own country men as opposed to what they are trained to do on the battlefield.
