As usual a sagacious presentation... But there are always at least two sides to anything - matter or views. Responsibility (in this case for The Government) adds new dimensions to issues that is seldom foreseen or ignored in the free speech domain. A recent stark example is the New Presidency in the United States – this example is just because it was a bitterly fought elections with contrasting promises during the campaigns. But once in the chair, the new President finds it hard to keep his campaign promises, especially in foreign affairs matters, after taking over the controls. It will be naïve to assume that Governments introduce rules to wield the stick over the media. The media will have a case only if self-regulation is followed in letter and spirit. But “We the people” have concerns about the media handling issues without trying to influence, either which way.

I am glad that the honourable SC of India has also taken this view.
