Shekhar, I beg your pardon. You are wrong. In India Islam can kill democracy without the Army. The reason for the “divide” today, I feel is explained in a quote from the book “New clash of civilizations” by Minaz Merchant published in 2013. “You reap what you sow and if any religious group sow the seeds of communalism by insisting on separate laws (and / or exclusivity) for themselves, they will reap the ill will of communal backlash” I endorse his view as we have a precedence. The Caste system in India was created by affording separate laws, special privileges and political patronage to the upper castes. We do not want to repeat that by creating another privileged class with separate laws etc.; do we? A “secular” democracy is one which has the same laws for all its citizens within which different religions practice their faith according to prevalent societal practices. A secular nation is not one which has different laws for different religions, which divides societies, allowing such divisions to be perpetually exploited by vested interests within and outside the country. Only “We the people” can change, without changing core values and just by emerging out of medieval era methods to make a difference in society. Smell the coffee instead of beating around the bush Forward Ho!
