@willw8011 While the American intervention was significant I would question that it was decisive. Montgomery's Eighth Army was driving in from the East, which would remain unchanged, and there is no reason to suppose that the First Army doesn't still land in the West. Even if Torch doesn't take place, the British forces involved can be diverted to join up with the Eighth Army (although the Eighth Army was doing a decent job of driving Rommel's forces back as it was). Of more significance for the campaign was probably the German campaign in Russia tying up potential German reinforcements. To be brutal for much of the campaign the American performance in North Africa is not great, and it's only after significant changes, the appointment of Patton in March 1943 to command II Corps being foremost amongst them that it becomes a good force. Overall the North African campaign was largely a British Commonwealth effort.

He won because he outclassed Rommel.

@willw8011 No they occurred 2 weeks after the Decisive Battle of El Alamein, the Germans retreated because of the Eighth army driving them back.
