I doubt he was interrogated for 12 years. I'd assume after the Soviets had gotten all they could out of him he was sent to the same camps or holding facilities the other German POW's were held in. Due to his cooperation he MAY have been given better treatment than the others, but that's a guess on my part.

@williamlydon2554 I met a man once who was a Marine Raider who served with James Roosevelt. As he put it to me "Jimmy Roosevelt was a great Marine!"

@KonginDB "Mad Jack" Churchill, and he killed a German soldier with the longbow as well! However if he was a relative of Winston's he was a VERY distant relative, if a relative at all.

The first time I heard about that pact I thought it was heartbreakingly sad. Still, being related to a monster has to be a pretty heavy load to carry, even if no rational person can blame you personally for it.

George Patton called Teddy Roosevelt Jr. "The bravest man I ever knew."

A Happy New Year to you and yours Doctor Felton!

Honestly, it says they weren't trying to hide anything from you, they were willing to let you read "Mein Kampf" and make up your own mind. My high school library had a copy of "MK" which I read and only got half-way through before I gave up on it. "MK's" one of the most poorly-written books I've ever had the displeasure to read. Trust me, Hitler's speeches got him his following, not that lousy book. "MK's" not a recruitment tool by any means.

As far as Berlin was concerned Eisenhower knew of the post-war occupation plans for Germany and Berlin in particular, those were "set in stone" and wouldn't be changed. So he knew there was no point in the Western Allies risking the worst street fight in history by taking Berlin, if the Russians wanted it that badly they could have it. In fact the Russians from privates up to generals knew a fight for Berlin was going to be bad but no-one was going to say "No!" to Stalin. One Russian officer years later said "We should have just surrounded the city and pounded it with artillery until they gave up, but that son-of-a-bitch Stalin wanted it by May Day!"

Stalin had no sympathy for any of his people who got captured. "Fight to the death and make them kill you!" was his take on things. Nice, huh?

Hands-off "Dubya," he wasn't the only one who took advantage of the National Guard option. I remember those years well and thousands took the NG path to avoid the draft and no-one thought the lesser of them for it. And the Guard was willing to take everyone who wanted to join as well. And mind you, there was NO guarantee that Guard members (or members of the Reserves for that matter) wouldn't be called up to go to Vietnam. LBJ never exercised the option as he knew it would be political dynamite for the Democrats if he did and Nixon saw no need to. And just WHEN did it become important to liberals that someone DIDN'T serve in Vietnam? As I recall it a lot of them were in the streets calling 'Nam vets baby-killers and things a lot worse.
