As an American it doesn't embarass me at all. Hey, those guys had one, two, three, maybe four years stolen out of their lives fighting a war none of them asked for so if they wanted to souvenir articles from the man and others responsible who's to blame them? Not me brother! And neither should anyone else! And besides, don't kid yourselves that when the RAF bombed the Berghof complex the aircrews didn't get a grim satisfaction out of it. And I wouldn't blame them either.

I suspect the reasons Hitler didn't go to the Eagle's Nest all that often were: 1) It was inconvenient. It's four miles away from the Berghof and a steep and winding road has to be taken to get there. 2) It's just an elaborate scenic overlook with no provision for overnight stays. 3) He never asked for it to be built in the first place! By the way, a portion of the 1980s TV mini-series "War and Remembrance" was shot at the Eagle's Nest. The sequence is an imagined post-Normandy invasion conference between Hitler and his top brass. It gets your attention right away if you know what you're looking at!

@johncarter44 He might have for his actions on D-Day except the divisions involved had "reverse quotas," for lack of a better term, applied to Medal of Honor recommendations. Just a certain amount and no more so Dick Winters was "robbed" of the opportunity. As an aside General Patton thought quotas on medals were an absolute crock and totally unfair. Patton was very generous with medals he could award like the Bronze Star without a formal inquiry process. Captain Winters did get the Distinguished Service Cross for his D-Day actions, the second-highest US combat decoration and a VERY good award in it's own right.

@dannagy546 I hope it stays in the family for years to come! Best wishes to you and yours!

@benjaminallen5824 Yes, I've heard that too and with a bit of claustrophobia thrown in. Quite honestly I don't believe either, he never had a problem with any other elevators and if he was claustrophobic how did he stand it in the bunker, or any other bomb shelter? It hardly matters anyway.

@bnghjtyu767 Hey, the only reason the US Army stopped the souveniring of the Eagle's Nest was they wanted it for part of the Berghof recreational complex for the occupation troops. A hollow shell of a building doesn't make for a very good rec center!
