Restoration may not be possible considering it's been over 75 years in salt water, but removal, stabilization, and preservation as a museum-piece relic would be do-able.

You know, of all the movies made during WW2 by Hollywood one that's stood the test of time better than many others is one called "Action In The North Atlantic," and it's about the Merchant Marine! With very high production values and starring Humphrey Bogart, Raymond Massey, Alan Hale, Dane Clark, and a galaxy of Warner Brothers star character actors it's well worth watching if you get the chance. A great movie! I've seen it dozens of times and it never gets old.

Even more valuable than the jeeps to the Russians were the trucks we sent them. They were glad to have the tanks and airplanes sent as aid, but they REALLY needed trucks!

Off-topic, but anyone who thinks the climate of this planet has been stable and unchanging since the Creation is a poorly educated fool. Or has an ulterior motive. Or something.

If they don't it's because they haven't seen "Zulu!"

"Der Gabelschwanz Teufel," or "The Fork-Tailed Devil!"

I have to wonder just how well-trained that young lieutenant was on the P-38 he was flying. The P-38 was a great airplane but from what I understand the fuel system had to be monitored carefully by the pilot. Not doing so could cause the problem the pilot of this airplane had, or worse it could cause inbalance in the airplane leading to serious handling issues. The fact the pilot didn't have his wings yanked would lead me to believe the review board didn't come down too hard on him after looking at all the facts.

@alanjm1234 Yes, I remember reading that in "Reach For The Sky." Embarassing for Bader, to say the least! I'm reminded of an incident I heard of in the early 1970's from those who witnessed it. There was a Marine lieutenant colonel, CO of an A4 squadron, who'd flown many-many missions in Vietnam. He brought his Skyraider in for a perfect text-book landing but unfortunately forgot to lower the landing gear! As the saying goes, "It can happen to the best of 'em!"

@bebo4374 Correct, the P-38 used Allison engines. Good engines, but poor performers at high altitude even with suprcharging. That ruled them out as long-range escorts for B-17's and B-24's in Europe, but in the Pacific where planes operated at lower altitudes the P-38's range was a tremendous asset. The USAAF's top-scoring aces in the Pacific flew P-38's.

I'd guess they didn't think it was worth the trouble. Most likely anything easily recovered like the machine guns were removed and anything else was written off. There were plenty more P-38's where that one came from.

@FiveCentsPlease Salt water would have done a number on the radio as well.
