That's not too unusual. Many aircrewmen on both sides never set foot in an airplane again after the war, one of my uncles (ex-USAAF) was one of them. They did the job they were trained to do and when the war was over that was the end of it.

Um, yes and no. Radio announcers and newsreel narrators were held to certain elocution standards, one of which was as close to a regional-neutral accent as possible. American regional accents were in fact fully developed by the turn of the 20th Century and according to linguists are even slightly heavier now than they were then.

To my knowledge the only aircraft with a respected non-combatant status in the European Theater in WW2 were civilian airliners. And the only time I'm aware of that was violated was when the DC-3 with actor Leslie Howard on board was intercepted and shot down by the Luftwaffe. There's been plenty of theories as to "why" but no real resolution to the controversy to my knowledge. Everyone else? If you were a military aircraft you were fair game no matter what kind you were.
