As elsewhere said, properly "vi". A lot of programmers have professed their love to me of vi, but they are actually talking about vim. Vi was akin to using a chainsaw without a guard. We used it in the early days (1982 or so) for Unix on terminals in the 1200 baud range. Basically every key did something, which meant that if you accidently elbowed the keyboard, you were better off aborting the edit and starting over than to try to figure out what mode you had invoked. Worse, the crappy terminals and serial lines of the day would drop characters on the line, meaning that what you thought you were typing was not what you were editing anymore. For this, you had a "refresh key" that would cause the entire screen to be repainted, and you hit that anytime you had the strange feeling that your and the machine were no longer in sync. Loads o' fun.
